After the last big storm, somebody walking the dog noticed the trench. A channel cut into the pond bank below the storm pipe, deep enough to turn an ankle in, with a fan of dirt spread across the pond bottom beneath it. Or maybe it’s the riprap: the rock that used to armor the slope has slumped toward the bottom, and there’s bare dirt showing where it used to be. It’s been getting worse for a while. The question at the board meeting is whether this is a problem or just what ponds look like.
It’s a problem, and it’s one of the few pond problems with a genuine clock on it. Erosion is self-accelerating: every storm makes the next storm’s damage worse, and the price of the repair tracks the delay almost linearly. The good news is the inverse is also true. Caught early, erosion is one of the cheapest things on a pond to fix.
Why Front Range Ponds Erode
Erosion happens where water concentrates, and a detention pond is a machine for concentrating water. The usual locations, in rough order of frequency: the rundowns where storm pipes and curb cuts discharge into the pond, taking the full force of every storm; the banks along the flow path from inlet to outlet; the area around the outlet structure, where the pond’s whole volume accelerates as it leaves; and the emergency spillway, which erodes rarely but matters most when it does.

Reading the Stages
Rills: fingers of bare soil. Small parallel channels an inch or two deep, usually below a rundown or on a bare patch. This is the hand-tools stage: regrade, reseed, blanket, and fix whatever concentrated the flow. Cost is landscaping-scale money, and this is the year to spend it.
Gullies: the trench stage. Rills consolidate into channels deep enough that a mower can’t cross them. The gully now concentrates flow itself, which is why it deepens every storm, and its head cuts uphill toward the pipe or the street above. Repair means filling, compacting, and armoring the flow path properly, typically $5,000 to $25,000 depending on extent. Waiting doesn’t hold the price; the gully grows.
Failing riprap. Rock armor fails from underneath: flow gets beneath the rock, pulls out the bedding or the soil, and the rock slides down-slope, leaving the bank bare exactly where the design decided armor was necessary. Topping off displaced rock early is cheap. Rebuilding a rundown with proper bedding after the subgrade has washed out is a real project. Woody vegetation growing up through riprap accelerates the failure, roots pry the rock apart, so cutting it out is maintenance, not landscaping.
Embankment damage: the one to take seriously. Most pond erosion is a maintenance economics story. Erosion on the embankment, the constructed berm that holds the pond back, is different, because the embankment is the structural element. Gullies, burrows, seepage, or slumping on an embankment deserve a professional look promptly, not at the next annual inspection. Larger embankments can also fall under dam safety oversight, which raises the stakes of neglect considerably.
Why It Compounds, and Where the Dirt Goes
Two compounding effects drive the economics. The first is on the slope: eroded areas concentrate more flow, which erodes faster, which concentrates more flow. There is no equilibrium where the gully decides it’s deep enough. The second is at the bottom: every cubic yard that leaves the bank lands in the pond as sediment, filling the forebay, burying the trickle channel, and marching the pond toward the sediment removal project that’s already the most expensive item in its future. Bank erosion is buying dredging on layaway.
It also doesn’t go unnoticed. Erosion and displaced riprap are among the most common findings on jurisdiction facility inspections, partly because they’re visible from the bank, and an eroding pond photographs like neglect even when the mowing is immaculate. Fix the Cause or Rent the Symptom
The repair that lasts addresses why the water concentrated. Regrading a gully without armoring the flow path that cut it, or without redirecting the irrigation head that saturated it, is a subscription: same repair, every few years, at slowly increasing prices. A proper scope names the cause, and getting the scope right is an inspection task, not a bidding task; an independent inspection produces a prioritized list with the causes attached, which is what lets multiple contractors bid the same work. The inspection costs a few hundred dollars, and erosion is the finding where catching it one year earlier pays the most.
